Piper Fellows: How to Apply

Application Letter

Please attach a letter of no more than three pages responding to the following questions:

  • Why have you chosen your current field of work?
  • What significant lessons have you learned in your work?
  • What do you see yourself doing in five years?
  • How would you use the award resources and release time for personal development of your capacity to enhance the level of leadership, client service and operational effectiveness within your organization? Be specific about proposed activities or course of study and length of time, and include all associated costs.
  • How would your experience as a Piper Fellow benefit your organization?

Additional Materials:

In addition to the application letter, please submit the following:

  • A one-page description of your organization, its mission and its services.
  • A resume that covers, at minimum, the past ten years of your career.
  • A proposed budget for organizational and personal expenditures.
  • A list of three Maricopa County area references with complete contact information.
  • A brief letter of endorsement, signed by your organization's board chair or other appropriate person, that includes the following: a plan for organizational management during your absence and upon your return, a guarantee of maintenance of your regular health and other benefits during the award period, and an agreement that you will not go to the place of work or be distracted by work issues during your leave.
  • If available, guidelines and funding principles from your organization for any programs that encourage and support continuing education and staff development.
  • If continuing education and staff development funds are not being requested, please indicate why.
  • All supplemental materials should be prepared on standard 8.5" x 11" paper and submitted by mail or courier service. Submittals by email or fax will not be accepted. Incomplete and/or late applications will not be considered.

Timeline:

September 15
Postmark deadline for receipt of completed applications at the Trust's office.

September 15, 5 p.m.
Deadline for receipt of couriered applications at the Trust's office.

Late November
Finalists' interviews at the Trust's office.

Early December
Notification/Announcement of awards.

The Selection Committee:

The selection process will be conducted by an independent committee of distinguished Valley citizens who have knowledge of and appreciation for the importance of the nonprofit sector and its contributions to the vitality of the region.

The selection committee will operate completely independently and make its recommendations directly to the Piper Trust Board for its consideration.
