Reflecting on the Experience ..."It is an opportunity to experience training and education on a level most usually reserved for for profit leaders. It is an opportunity to focus on you -- assessing where you are, where to wish to go, and then to experience getting there."

"As a 25-year veteran nonprofit executive director, I was feeling the burden of the saying, 'It isn't the mountain ahead that wears you down, it's the grain of sand in your moccasin.' The Piper Fellows award responded to the grain of sand in a most unique, rewarding and renewing way."
- Pamela Martin, President & Executive Director, Homeward Bound

Field Notes
"My Piper Fellowship consisted of two parts: a National Training Laboratories (NTL) experience in Bethel, Maine, and a best practice trip to New York City. At NTL, I participated in two weeklong labs. The first, Human Interaction, was the study of the complex process of communication and human interaction. The result of the second lab, Self-Awareness and Being: The Importance of Self in the Influence Process, was enhancement of professional and interpersonal effectiveness.
"The second part of my sabbatical was spent in New York City, where I researched transitional and permanent housing programs that serve domestic violence and homeless families with children. Both of these programs - Homes for the Homeless and Palladia - are considered by HUD to have exemplary services, staffing and facilities. Concurrently, the Homeward Bound staff has benefited immensely from the opportunity for additional training funds, allowing them to grow and prosper professionally and personally."
